Venus Williams officially qualified for the second-last spot in the WTA Sony Ericsson Championships on Thursday. The 8th and final spot is still unknown, however, as Maria Sharapova and Daniela Hanutchova are batlling over it.

Should Hantuchova win the Linz title this weekend, she and Sharapova will be tied in 8th place with 2431 points. In this situation, the player with the more tournaments played would be given entry to the Championship. However, the WTA does have the power to grant the 8th position to a WC, which would make this situation quite juicy. Let's see how it turns out!

well i think we see it's abvious that maria will not be able to play in the wta championships. she is struggling with her injuries and i really doubt from what she wrote in her doodle in her official website, that she will be competing in the championships. I hope she is 100% if she does qualify but if not i don't think she will want to be embarrased by the top eight women, seeing how most of them lately have a winning record against her. also her rank and her position has dropped so low right now she is going to get a tough draw at the championships. we'll see hope she does what is best for her health.

If it comes to a wc, the WTA should grant Maria the spot because if she were playing 100% healthy (without the shoulder), everyone knows she would earn it.

maria will play in madrid! all that because venus williams had to withdraw. Yup, Not the best way to qualify - hoping that somebody withdraws but maria deserves it, because had she been fully fit, she would have been just behind henin this year or who knows! Anyhow good luck in madrid maria!!!xxxxxxx

Maria is the best player in the world of tennis sport. She is very nice. I always support her every time. I always see her game when she had played.I think ranking is not the problem with Maria. She get low because of she didnt play to much, and she has problems with her injury. I dont respect with the high ranks femele players on her. Because of they played to much. I think the federation of tennis should keep her high ranking. But Hennin i respect too. Hennin and Maria,they both are the great players the same. This year they dont meet each other in game. I want them meet each other too much.sorry na Hennin, dont be up set, a person that i like the most is Maria.
