Maria, who looked a bit drowsy, lost her first match in Hong Kong of compatriot Elena Dementieva 6-7 (2-7) 6-3 6-1.
Maria and her partner Vera Zvonareva also lost in the doubles 3-8 against Svetlana Kuznetsova and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.
On Friday 18.30 local time Maria will play her final match of the red group against Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic.

The Hong Kong draw is released, and Maria will play two singles matches and one doubles match. In Maria's first match of the Watson Water Challenge she will play fellow Russian Elena Dementieva. The match will start 18.30 local time.
