Maria Sharapova survived an injury and another challenge from a fellow Russian, defeating Anna Chakvetadze in 3 sets 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 Thursday in a third-round match at the JPMorgan Chase Open.


Sharapova said she played in pain from an inflamed right pectoral muscle that affected her ability to serve hard and pound forehands.

Russian top seed Maria Sharapova shook off the rust of five weeks away from the court to overcome a frustrated Maria Kirilenko 7-6 6-2 in the second round of the JP Morgan Chase Open on Tuesday.



Playing her first tour match since losing to Venus Williams in the semi-finals at Wimbledon, an erratic Sharapova mixed pinpoint accuracy on her booming groundstroke with a string of errors forced by her speedy and creative compatriot.

Tonight Maria will play her first match in Los Angeles against Maria Kirilenko of Russia. Kirilenko reached the second round after defeating American Marissa Irvin 4-6, 7-5, 6-2


Maria has never played her friend and multiple doubles partner Maria Kirilenko before.



This match will not start before 19.00 pm and is the 5th match at the main stadium. Good Luck Maria!

The draw for the JPMorgan Chase Open in Los Angeles has been released and Maria is the top seed after Lindsay Davenport pulled out of the tournament. Maria received a bye in the 1st round and will play either Marissa Irvin of the United States or Maria Kirilenko of Russia in the second round.


Maria has played Irvin once before in Miami this year and won 6-2 6-0. Maria has never played Kirilenko before.
